A Great Place to Work
Whatcom County offers a vast variety of career choices, from University Professor to Organic Farmer. With lots of local career choices, Whatcom’s unique location between Seattle and Vancouver also opens up many ways to do business on an international level as well.

Places to Work
The top ten employers represent about 24% of the total jobs in the County. Beyond them, there are numerous opportunities for owning your own business, or working for one of the other thriving employers throughout the County. Some citizens have their offices in Seattle or Canada, but simply work from home, only making the commute on rare occasions.

Small Town Thinking

Whatcom County is concerned with it’s citizens and it’s economy. This is shown through the support of it’s residents of the many locally owned and operated businesses. On top of that, nearly 400 members in numerous industries, including retail, farming, building, manufacturing, and professional services have joined forces in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and San Juan Counties to form Think Local, Buy Local, Be Local. The business members are all local and independently owned and operated, and are committed to establishing a strong local living economy by supporting strong community, a healthy natural environment, meaningful employment, and buying local first. This program enhances the livability of our community, the stability and diversity of the local economy, and the retention and expansion of independent, NW Washington owned businesses through increasing awareness about the personal, community, and economic benefits of choosing local first.

Whatcom Transit Authority

The Whatcom Transit Authority has reliable and frequent bus routes around the County, also offering intercounty connections if you are planning to travel south. WTA offers specialized transit for the elderly and disabled. There are buses running to the Whatcom Community College and Western Washington University every 15 minutes, a sure way to be on time. Busses are a great alternative to driving to work, one that many residents choose to take advantage of.
